Why Flange Size Matters When Using a Breast Pump

The flange is the part of your breast pump that comes into direct contact with your breast. It fits over your nipple and areola to create a vacuum seal, allowing efficient milk expression.

Choosing the correct flange size is essential for comfort, milk flow, and breast health. A flange that’s too small or too large can cause pain, poor milk output, or even issues such as mastitis (breast inflammation).

The MomiWave® Breast Pump includes several flange options and smaller inserts that can be placed inside the standard flange. These inserts reduce the tunnel opening where the nipple sits, helping you achieve a more customized, comfortable, and effective pumping experience.

Flange sizes typically range from 13 mm to 27 mm, depending on the brand. This measurement refers to the entrance of the flange tunnel, not the outer edge of the flange. The MomiWave® Pump includes a 24 mm standard flange, a nipple ruler to help determine your size, and inserts from 17 mm to 21 mm to fit a wide variety of nipple sizes.

How to Find Your Correct Flange Size for a Wearable Pump

To get the best fit, you’ll need to measure your nipple.

The MomiWave® breast pump includes a convenient nipple measuring tool with various hole sizes to make this process quick and simple. Since each nipple can differ slightly in size, be sure to measure both sides for the most accurate fit.

If you don’t have the Luna® ruler, you can also use a standard ruler or measuring tape.

Follow these three easy steps to find your perfect flange size:

Step 1

Gently stimulate your nipple so it becomes firm and elongated.

Step 2

• 
  If using a ruler or measuring tape: Measure the diameter of your nipple (just the nipple itself, not the areola) in millimeters, from one side to the other at the base.
  
• 
  If using the Luna® nipple ruler: Place your nipple into the holes one by one until you find the one that fits comfortably — your nipple should pass through the hole completely, and the ruler should rest lightly against your areola.
  

Remember to measure both nipples separately, as their sizes may differ.

Step 3

Once you know your measurement, refer to the size guide. It’s generally best to choose a flange that’s 1–3 mm larger than your nipple diameter.

For example, if your nipple measures 15–17 mm, a 19 mm insert would likely be the right fit.
